Scope and Contents

The David Brighton Timmins papers (1968-1989) consist primarily of materials relating to Dr. Timmins career in the United States Foreign Service, including correspondence, State Department memoranda, reports, and official documents. Also included are documents relating to his role in the establishment of the Department of Economics at Weber State University and papers regarding his tenure teaching economics at Instituto Tecnologico Y De Estudios Superiores De Monterrey.

Biographical Note

David Brighton Timmins was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 21, 1930. After graduating from East High School in Salt Lake City in 1947, he attended the University of Utah. He earned both a BS and MS from the U, where he was elected to Pi Sigma Alpha, the International Political Science Honorary Society and Omicron Delta Epsilon, the Economics Honor Society. He was a Littauer Fellow at Harvard, where he earned an MPA and PhD with honors. Dr. Timmins went on to serve in the United States Foreign Service for 32 years. While in the Foreign Service, Dr. Timmins was posted to the U.K., France, Iceland, Madrid, Morocco, and Guatemala. He had several assignments at the State Department in Washington, D.C., including a tour as a member of the Board of Examiners and another as Executive Assistant and Secretary of Delegation to the NATO Ambassador. During a two-year leave of absence from the State Department, Dr. Timmins organized and staffed an independent Department of Economics at Weber State University. In later life, after retiring from the Foreign Service, Dr. Timmins accompanied Lola, his wife, on her Foreign Service assignments to France, Mexico, Beijing, Romania, and Geneva, Switzerland. He enjoyed teaching International Finance and Economics at Universities in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Utah, Guatemala, Mexico, and Geneva. Finally, in 1996, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress from Utah's Second District. Dr. Timmins passed away on July 16, 2008 in Salt Lake City.
