Scope and Contents

The John R. Winder diary (1857-1858) contains entries from November 1857 to April 1858. The first few pages of the diary have been cut out and may have dated back two months earlier to September 1857, the same month that the Mountain Meadows Massacre occurred. The last few pages have also been cut out.

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.

The original item has been been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the item/items if being used. Photocopies are available in the collection for research use.

Biographical Note

John R. Winder (1821-1910) held various positions within the LDS Church, including Second Counselor to the Presiding Bishop in 1887, and First Counselor in the First Presidency to Joseph F. Smith 1901 to 1910. He was married to Ellen Walters and had ten children.
