Biographical Note

Loewe (1884-1963) was born in Fuerth, Bauern, Germany, on 19 August 1884 to Hugust Loewe and Clotilde Blumenthal. He married Ida A. Witte on 27 November 1919, and they had two children: Herman L. Loewe and Susenne L. Puttuck. Loewe was an emeritus research professor of pharmacology at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. He is best known as a leading authority on the chemical structure of marijuana and its effects on human behavior and physiology. In 1935, Loewe left Germany and came to the United States where he started at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. In 1946, Loewe came to the University of Utah, and in 1957, he received emeritus status. Loewe has published over 350 different scientific papers, mostly on marijuana and other pharmaceutical topics. He died 24 August 1963 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
