Scope and Contents
The Heist and Birkhaus family papers (1897-1946) contain the correspondence, family memorabilia, various scrapbooks and ephemera of a family from the last part of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. Much of the collection centers around the period just before World War II. Incidental to this is a Hawaiian Island cruise scrapbook, from a trip taken in 1937 by Laura Heist (b. 1912). Also included are a collection of early twentieth-century greeting cards, travel diaries, World War II ration cards, and news clippings.
