The Orson Spencer letter (1852) is from Spencer to his son-in-law, Hiram B. Clawson. It concerns the estate of Samuel A. Curtis (Spencer's father-in-law), and how that estate might effect Spencer's children. Spencer was an author, chancellor of the University of the State of Deseret, and on the Utah Board of Regents. He also worked with Orson Pratt on the phonetic Deseret Alphabet.

Biographical Sketch
Orson Spencer (1802 – 1855) was born in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was a prolific writer and prominent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in several highly visible positions within the church and left an extensive legacy of theological writings. Spencer was also the chancellor of the University of the State of Deseret, and on the Utah Board of Regents. He also worked with Orson Pratt on the phonetic Deseret Alphabet.
