Scope and Contents

The Joseph Smith Scofield diary [photocopy and typescript] (1846-1847) consist of a brief description of Scofield's journey to the Salt Lake Valley with the first company of Mormon pioneers. A nine-page typed copy is included with a photocopy of the original diary. Scofield writes of the weather, mileage traveled, meetings with Brigham Young, problems with Indians, and various activities by the company, among other things.

Biographical Sketch

Joseph Smith Scofield was born in Windham County, New York, on 2 August 1809. He was a member of the first company of Mormon pioneers who traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Scofield died in Bellevue, Washington County, Utah, on 8 March 1875.
