Scope and Contents

The Birten Wendell Allred pamphlet (1972) is entitled "The Life of a Horse and Buggy Stage Line Operator." Allred reminiscences about operations of a horse-drawn stage line between Moab and Thompson Springs, Utah, which hauled mail, freight, and passengers from 1910-1914, later using two Rambler automobiles in conjunction with horse-drawn wagons, and extending the run to Monticello, Utah. The pamphlet includes a map and description of the routes used, rest stops, descriptions of Studebaker wagons, and remarks on passengers.

Also included in the collection is a Moab-Thompsons Stage Line fare pass and a campaign card (1912) for Birten Allred, Sr.

Conditions Governing Access

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.

The Moab-Thompsons Stage Line fare pass and the campaign card (1912) for Allred have been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the items if being used. A photocopied access version is available for researchers.

Biographical Sketch

Birten Wendell Allred received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University. He studied plant ecology at the University of Nebraska and later worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
