Biographical Sketch

Prompted by the outbreak of World War II, the United States government stepped up efforts to utilize the vast reserves of oil shale in Utah and Colorado for the production of oil and gasoline. Although there was considerable interest in oil shale during the 1920s and several oil shale companies were formed, little was known about large-scale mining procedures and refining processes. In 1944, Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act which authorized the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate a demonstration plant. The Anvil Points area on Naval Reserve lands near Rifle, Colorado, was selected for the demonstration project. Boyd Guthrie was director of the Anvil Points project, which operated from 1949 to 1956.
