Scope and Contents

The Corey (Kaare) Engen scrapbooks (1933-1991) contain three photocopied scrapbooks that focus on Corey Engen's skiing career. The first scrapbook covers the years 1933-1949 and tells of the years when Engen grew into a national skiing personality. The second scrapbook records the period from 1950-1969 and tells of Engen's development as a ski coach, ski resort manager, and businessman in McCall, Idaho. The third scrapbook focuses on the years from 1970-1991 and Engen's many skiing honors, including his 1973 induction into the Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpining, Michigan, and his awards acquired as a senior racer. Also included in this scrapbook is a short history of Brundage Mountain.

Biographical Sketch

In 1933, Corey Engen, at age sixteen, immigrated from Norway to Salt Lake City, Utah, to join his two older brothers. In 1948 he was elected captain of the United States Nordic Olympic Team. By 1949, Engen and his brothers, Alf and Sverre, were internationally known for their contributions and abilities in both Nordic and Alpine skiing. In 1961 he formed a successful business partnership with J. R. Simplot and Warren Brown to develop McCall's Brundage Mountain into a ski resort. In 1987, the original business partnership that developed Brundage Mountain helped celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the McCall ski resort by opening a new ski lift. Engen retired in 1988.
