Biographical Note

Mark Strand (1887-1965) immigrated to the United States from Norway in 1910, and finding a lack of winter sports in Utah, made a career of promoting them. He organized the Intermountain Ski Association, currently known as the Intermountain Division of the the United States Ski Association, and served as vice president and director of the National Ski Association. Strand was a member of the United States Olympic Committee in 1932 and 1952 as well as the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. In 1958, he was elected into the National Ski Hall of Fame.

The Marthinius A. Strand Utah skiing collection (1932-1984) contain newspaper clippings, magazine articles and newsletters. Strand is widely regarded as the father of the Intermountain skiing industry. He is a member of the National Ski Association Hall of Fame.

Gift of Karen Jefferies, granddaughter of Mark Strand, in 1993.
