Scope and Contents

The Scott M. Matheson papers (1916-2001) contain correspondence, campaign materials, reports, interview transcripts, research materials, news clippings, environmental documents, information concerning the Utah Democratic Policy Commission and other boards and committees, and other documents relating to Scott M. Matheson's career as governor of Utah from 1976 to 1984. Biographical sketches, position papers, and news clippings are located in box 1. Course materials for Political Science R-1 can be found in box 2. Documents relating to Awards and Programs dating from 1977 to 1985 are contained in boxes 3-4. Subject files in alphabetical order, including research materials, are located in boxes 5-20. Personal papers are contained in box 21. Get well correspondence is located in boxes 22-23. Newspapers and publications, including a Salt Lake Tribune series, are contained in box 24. Additional course materials can be found in box 25. Documents concerning the Philo T. Farnsworth Statutory Commission are included in box 26. Documents relating to the Utah Taxpayers Association are contained in box 27. Boxes 28-28A contain information about the Utah Democratic Policy Commission. Box 29 includes documents concerning Project Bold, a proposal for Utah land consolidation and exchange. Environmental papers, including information about the Nature Conservancy, acid rain, and environment and resource management can be found in box 34. Information concerning medical issues, such as the Institute of Medicine and the Alaska Public Health Commission, is contained in boxes 35-36. Papers related to aspects of Utah and United States judicial and legal systems are located in box 37. Boxes 38-51 contain information on boards, committees, and commissions, with additional information pertaining to the Democratic Policy Commission located in boxes 40-51. Records concerning nuclear waste negotiations in 1989 can be found in box 52. Miscellaneous documents are contained in box 53. Youth issues, such as teenage pregnancy prevention, are contained in box 54. Boxes 55-55A include printed works, the bulk of which are government published documents. Speeches given by Scott M. Matheson are located in boxes 56-63; and news clippings are contained in boxes 64-66, with 1992 campaign literature located at the end of box 66. Addenda are found in boxes 67-79.
