Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Herman S. Hoyt Southwest travel photograph album consists of 1 box containing a vernacular photograph album owned by Eunice Lillian Hunt of Lakeport, New Hampshire and containing images of people and places throughout California, Arizona and New Mexico. The photographs were likely taken by the professional photographer Herman S. Hoyt and were owned and perhaps annotated by Eunice Hunt.

The album measures approximately 7x6 and is a Housh Flexible album with black pages. It contains 27 black-and-white photograph prints and one black-and-white postcard of Sanbornton, New Hampshire at the front of the album. These photos were likely taken around 1902 and 1903 when Hoyt accompanied Professor William H. Dudley on a lecture tour of the Southwest, serving as photographer and slide operator. It is unknown how the images came into the possession of Eunice Hunt. Most of the images have titles and annotations handwritten in white ink on opposing page of photo; additional pen or pencil annotations are present on some images, perhaps modern additions. As identified by the album's compiler, images depict members of the Puebloans, particularly members of the Laguna Pueblo tribe. Other people depicted include Apache and Navajo peoples. Locations include: Clear Creek Canyon, Colorado; Laguna, New Mexico; Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona; Flagstaff, Arizona; San Francisco Bay. Subjects: children and parents, including babies wrapped in cradle boards; burros; homes; pottery making; camp and breakfast; and boats on water.
