Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The California gold mines letter collection (1849-1853) consists of nine letters describing life in California during the Gold Rush. Most of the letters are from a Melvin Paden to his wife, Jane. Also included is a petition to the California State Legislature requesting it to alter laws for the protection of miners and their use of water.
