Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
Save Our Canyons (SOC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1972 in response to growing threats to natural spaces along the Wasatch Front. The Save Our Canyons records (1955-2013) contain the committee’s organizational records, correspondence, community outreach materials, research, and professional materials from its longtime president Gale Dick, as well as master plans and environmental impact statements from ski resorts (Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, and Snowbasin) and other developments in Utah’s canyons. SOC worked closely with the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Bid and Organizing Committees to minimize the games’ environmental impact. Material regarding these efforts includes correspondence, research, news clippings, press kits, and environmental impact statements. Also included in the Save Our Canyons records are court documents from lawsuits involving the committee in regard to the Wasatch Powderbird Guides, ski resort chair lifts (Alta, Snowbird, Snowbasin), and Snowbird’s Master Development Plan.
