Scope and Contents
Chamberlain (b. 1923) grew up in American Fork, Utah. He discusses his childhood, the Depression and schooling. He joined the Navy in 1941 and describes his boot camp training in San Diego. After attending machinists’ school at Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned to a cargo ship, Arcturus. He describes his activities and duties as they travel to their base in Oran. Other topics include the battles of Casablanca, Sicily and Salerno; travels to Australia; submarine school in New London, Connecticut; and duties, missions, and operations of the USS Sea Owl (405). The crew was in Hawaii for R and R when the war ended. They returned to the East Coast through Panama. Chamberlain continued his duty in Panama and Florida until his separation from the Navy in June 1947. After the war, he worked as a machinist at Geneva Steel for thirty-six years.
