Scope and Contents

  1. Robert Newman grew up in a working-class family in Philadelphia. Early in his life he developed a passion for reading and eventually pursued his passion for literature as a James Joyce scholar. After a variety of different jobs, Mr. Newman was hired by the University of Texas A and M, where he eventually became an administrator. He then moved to the University of South Carolina where he took a chair position. After his time at South Carolina, Mr. Newman took the job as Dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Dean Newman has been integral in starting a number of programs, the most high profile of which is the environmental humanities program. He was also integral in developing and solidifying the University of Utah’s stewardship of the Taft-Nicholson Center in Centennial Valley, Montana. Dean Newman also played an important role in refocusing the Middle East Center and the development and planning of the Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities building at the University of Utah. Dean Newman is now moving on to become the president and director of the National Humanities Center in North Carolina.
