Scope and Contents

  1. David Spencer Chapman grew up in a village in British Columbia. He attended the University of British Columbia, where he met and married his wife, Inga. They spent six years in Zambia and four more in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before David took a junior academic position at the University of Utah in 1976. At the University of Utah, David has been an active scholar, teacher, and mentor and has influenced hundreds of students. David was the sixth dean of the University of Utah Graduate School. He served in the Graduate School for sixteen years, from 1993 to 2009, first as associate dean for five years and then for eleven years as dean. David has been an influential leader across the entire campus, receiving department, college, and university teaching awards, and being honored as University Professor in 1991-1992. In 1998 David Chapman was the seventh Gould Distinguished Lecturer on Technology and the Quality of Life, a lecture that has had an international influence. And in 2006 he received the prestigious Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence.
