No. 849 Joseph L. Cox IV, 2014
File — Box: 76, Folder: 18
Scope and Contents
- Navy veteran Joseph Cox was born in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up in Oxford, Ohio. He graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1993 with a degree in physics and chose Surface Warfare. After six months on the USS John F. Kennedy he transitioned to the USS Anchorage, an amphibious assault ship, and served all over the world. He conducted beach observations during the Somalian conflict of 1993, and then transferred to Explosive Ordnance. Cox left the Navy in spring 2001. He extensively discusses what he refers to as the “Afghan mindset,” and shares his thoughts on the pros and cons of drones versus live troops. He also describes the use of the old INMARSAT technology, used before the 2000s to allow shipboard personnel to place calls, and the old naval “Pony Express” system. He finishes by sharing his thoughts on the place of protest in wider society.
