Scope and Contents

  1. M. Walker Wallace joined the Navy during World War II while he was attending Stanford University. The Navy sent him to UCLA as a V-12 student to train to become an officer. Wallace left the service in 1946 and graduated from MIT in 1947. He then worked in the City Planning Office of Boston. Wallace eventually set up a consulting branch of Planning and Research in Utah, which became Wallace Associates. He became president of the Downtown Planning Association of Utah and helped develop Gallivan Plaza and the Main Street redevelopment project. The president of United Park City Mines asked Wallace to determine whether Park City could become a ski resort and Wallace worked on the development for a number of years. Wallace was also involved with development related to the Planet Ranch Mine in Arizona. He was later a partner on the development board for Snowbird Ski Resort and worked to develop the Snowbird Institute, which is now Deer Valley. Wallace has always been involved in the arts in Salt Lake City and has been a strong supporter of the symphony, the opera and ballet, and the museum of art. He and his mother were part of a group that helped develop the Utah Symphony. He had a close working relationship with Maurice Abravanel, who conducted the Utah Symphony and worked develop and better the symphony. In 1964, Wallace began efforts to help bring the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City, and he was involved in efforts to bring the games to Utah for several decades after that effort.
