No. 832 Richa Varga, 2012
File — Box: 76, Folder: 1
Scope and Contents
- Rich Varga was born in Sandy, Utah, to Hungarian immigrants. He grew up snowboarding, and hiked up runs at Alta often. He remembers the early days snowboarding at Brighton, when mini-skis were still required. Rich took third at the world competition in Breckenridge, Colorado, in 1986, and was a member of Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop’s Salty 8 competition team. By the late 1980s Rich was competing in Europe. He describes early snowboards and bindings from GNU, Winterstick, Burton and Kemper. After several years’ competition, Rich got a job at Salty Peaks, where he stayed for eight years. He discusses snowboarding culture in Utah and its shift over time, and talks about the Salty Eight.
