Scope and Contents
- James MacFarlane was born and raised in Salt Lake City, where he has lived his whole life. His father was a University of Utah supporter and encouraged James to be a supporter as well. He went to the University of Utah in 1949, played basketball for the freshman and varsity teams, joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and studied marketing. James graduated in 1954.He describes his position and his work with the Rocky Mountain Bank Note Company. After working for Rocky Mountain Bank Note Company he founded IC Marketing and IC Manufacturing, which is now called IC Group. James recently retired from his position with the IC Group. James then describes his time serving on the University of Utah board of trustees. He talks about his nomination to the board by Governor Mike Leavitt. He explains his working relationships with others on the board and others at the university, including former presidents Bernie Machen and Michael Young, and the board of regents. James was involved with the gun control debate, and talks about the controversy surrounding that issue. He explains his involvement with ARUP and his efforts to keep it from being sold. He describes his engagement with the many different institutions and groups at the University of Utah, including Pioneer Theatre, the Hinckley Institute, and the athletic departments.
