No. 827 Peter Jerome, 2012

 File — Box: 75, Folder: 21

Scope and Contents

  1. Boston-born Peter Jerome, an airline pilot for Delta, moved to Salt Lake City from Florida for work in 1992. Three of his four children were in the Park City ski jumping program, with daughter Jessica winning the Junior Olympics. Peter realized after 2002 that there was no leadership for women in ski jumping and got into funding. He helped set up Women’s Ski Jumping USA in the early 2000s, and became increasingly involved in the fight to get women’s ski jumping established as an Olympic sport. Working with Alan Johnson, Larry Stone, Kathy Shurtleff and especially Deedee Corradini, Peter lobbied hard in the US and Europe with the US Ski Team, the FIS, and the IOC. He describes the structure of the American and European ski jumping programs, focuses in particular on lobbying efforts and the suit in Vancouver to allow women into Olympic ski jumping, and discusses the women ski jumpers’ split with the US Ski Team. He likes Bill Kerig’s documentary Ready to Fly, and puts it in context with Jump Like a Girl and 110%. He finishes by recommending other potential interviewees, such as Larry Stone and Blair Tomten.
  2. Project: Outdoor Recreation oral history project.
  3. Interviewer: Erin Halcomb
