Scope and Contents

  1. This detailed set of three interviews covers the career of retired Senior Vice President for University of Utah Health Sciences A. Lorris Betz, who served in that role from 1999-2011. The first interview covers his transition from the University of Michigan to the University of Utah, when he followed Bernie Machen to take on a major leadership role in Utah. He discusses the transition, his focus on improving the patient experience at what became University Health Care, funding and his relationship with the legislature, and the early years of Huntsman Cancer Institute. The second interview talks about building accountabilities through mission based management, USTAR, the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute, and his aim for the University system to provide both primary and tertiary care as an academic medical center. The third interview addresses Dr. Betz’ time as interim president of the University of Utah in 2004, the Together We Reach capital campaign, his leadership style, advice for young academic medical professionals, his retirement, and finishes with a look at his family and his youth and early career including time at the University of Wisconsin and University of California San Francisco.
