Candice Kalamafoni, the youngest of four, was born in Arcadia, California, and raised in Pasadena and, briefly, Hawaii, attending Kaiser High School in Honolulu for her senior year. Hawaiian and Samoan, she felt out of place in Pasadena where there were few Polynesians. After her senior year of high school, Candice returned to California and attended City College in Pasadena while working different jobs. Shortly after getting married, Candice and her husband moved to Utah so her husband could attend Brigham Young University. Candice talks about her family life and the Hawaiian and Samoan customs she grew up with, and mentions that she really started appreciated Polynesian culture when she got into dancing in high school. She describes feeling racism for the first time when she moved to Utah but feels comfortable now. Note: The interview is incomplete. The audio cuts off at 23:47.
