Scope and Contents

Sela Nock was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised in the eastern United States. Her mother is Tongan, born in Hawaii, and her father a Caucasian from Pittsburgh. Her mother’s family were traveling dancers, and Sela also grew up dancing. Her family moved a lot due to her father’s work. She moved to Utah as an adult and at the time of the interview attended Utah Valley University. Ms. Nock discusses her family life and upbringing, mentioning that her parents are happy to support her education, but most especially discusses her sense of being between two cultures and her relationship with her family and other people both in the East and in the Utah Polynesian community. She was raised with little Tongan cultural influence and regrets that.
