Deitz (b. 1932) was born in New Jersey. He describes his enlistment in the Navy after the start of the Korean War, and his service as a corpsman with the medical corps of the Marines. It was during his travels for the military that he visited Salt Lake City and was positively influenced by the people and environment. This experience later influenced his decision to attend the University of Utah, where he completed his bachelor of science in 1957. He then studied immunology at Rutgers University where he met his wife. They left for Temple University, where he studied from 1961 to 1965, while they also raised a family. In 1970 he started his private practice in San Francisco and also worked as a rheumatologist for the 49ers football team. Currently he is an allergist for the San Francisco Giants. He credits the intense training he received throughout his life, especially at the University of Utah, for his success.
