Heileson grew up in Provo, Utah, where his experiences with camping and backpacking left him with a love for Utah’s wilderness. He grew up watching the political scene change, allowing more encroachment into the wilderness for oil and gas development, He was introduced to the Sierra Club while working on the senatorial campaign of Wayne Owens. After he received his degree in Natural Resources from Utah State University, he went to work for the Sierra Club. Heileson was involved in the Legacy Highway/Parkway debates leading to some compromise decisions that left the project much better than had been initially planned in terms of protection of the resources and the impact of a highway on the community. He is still involved in the Legacy phases II, III & IV. He explains how important the Clean Water Act has been in fighting the Legacy plan.
