Scope and Contents
John Wesley Powell: Canyon Geologist, produced by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Geological Survey, charts one-armed veteran geologist John Wesley Powell's first expedition through the Grand Canyon. Explanatory narration, adventurous orchestral music and direct readings from Powell's diary aid diverse visuals featuring a mix of landscape photography, animation, and Powell's own drawings. As the film recounts Powell's struggles against both nature and the uncertainty of his own crew whilst traveling down the river, various geological features of the Grand Canyon and the history of their formation are highlighted. The film culminates with a celebratory reminder of Powell's notable legacy
