The U.S. West research records (1850-1999) is a collection of historical and architectural surveys of businesses and cities in the West and Midwest of the United States. These surveys sometimes include oral histories, as well as photographs taken of various buildings. The collection includes a history of the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), as well as surveys of various cities and national parks in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan, and Utah. A large portion of the collection contains "Dead Files" which contain proposal materials for national, state, and local public history projects. Some of the information for these proposals come from Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Air Force and Military Services, as well as from many other sources.
