Family Letters

 File — Box: 11, Folder: 3-5

Scope and Contents

The family letters for this year indicate that the Senator became more active in the senate. He was a member of the Financial Committee chaired by Senator Byrd and the Atomic Energy Committee. He participated in background briefings about atomic energy and indicated he did not feel the testing in Nevada would prove to be a problem. He spends a fair amount of time making speeches for the Republican Party.

His personal life continued to be satisfactory. New grandchildren are born. He taught his Sunday School Class and continued his membership on the Sunday School Board. He noted the problem of age associated with the First Presidency of the Mormon Church. His son, David, completed his graduate work in Philosophy at Columbia. Both Bennett's traveled to Europe under the auspice of the Atomic Energy Committee. Mrs. Bennett provided a travel log. The Bennett's social life was well. He provided delightful accounts of Senator Byrd's apple blossom luncheon and a visit to J. Willard Marriott's farm. He described an unhappy encounter with Reed Benson, Ezra Taft Benson's son.
