Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The Mary Armstrong Milligan papers (1957-2000) contain journal excerpts, correspondence, a handbook, and scrapbooks dealing with Milligan's involvement in river rafting in the Western United States. Milligan (b.1909) was a participant in the South Cottonwood Ward organization (SOCOTWA). SOCOTWA is a semi-private river outfitter that began after World War II. Two Salt Lake City-based organizations, Moki Mac and SOCOTWA, began buying war surplus and conducting youth groups down the Colorado River. Most of the collection deals with Milligan's experiences on the river trips. Also included is research on Westwater done by Mike Milligan.
