Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The William H. Delves papers (1977-2002) include his resume and an essay he wrote concerning Juanita Brooks, Delbert L. Stapley, and David O. McKay. The main topic of the essay is Brooks's insistence that the restoration of John D. Lee's membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints be included in her book, John Doyle Lee: Zealot, Pioneer Builder, Scapegoat. Although David O. McKay had restored Lee to the LDS Church, there was concern that publicity would be harmful and Brooks was specifically asked not to include it. She insisted that historical accuracy needed acknowledgment, and printed it anyway. The title of the essay comes from David O. McKay's demand that those who would have excommunicated Brooks for her disobedience should "leave her alone." Also included in the collection is a copy of Delves's autobiography, In Sunshine and Shadow: The Memoirs of William Hughes Delves.
