Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The Reed A. Stout papers (1939-1997) contain correspondence, a diary, and reviews of the writings of D. Michael Quinn, a Mormon historian. Stout critiques Quinn's works, focusing on "The Mormon War of 1838" which took place in Dewitt, Carroll County, Missouri. This war occurred when non-Mormons tried to prevent Mormons from voting in the U.S. presidential election on 6 August 1838. This propelled non-Mormons to vote against the settlement of Mormons in Carroll County, and it was decided that those who were already settled would be required to leave the state.
