Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Charles A. Knight papers (1864-1865) contains Knight's original diary, a photocopy and a typescript of the diary, Knight's obituary, several poems by Charles A. Knight and David S. Davidson, excerpts from the book, Prison Life in Dixie (Central Book Concern: Chicago, 1880), and "The Story of the General," an article about a train named the General that ran during the Civil War. The diary dates from March 27, 1864 to June 24, 1865 and the original is accessible with permission of the Manuscript Division Head.

Conditions Governing Access

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.

The original diary have been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the item if being used.
