Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Claudius Y. Gates papers (1947-1996) consists primarily of correspondence documenting the long relationship between the University of Utah and Gates, a major donor to the libraries of the University of Utah and the University of Utah Medical Center. The collection also includes appraisals, announcements, programs, newsletters, news clippings, and various ephemera. Gates donated many fine press items, as well as the Columbian Hand Press, to the Marriott Library. The correspondence and appraisals are primarily focused on these donations. The Columbian Hand Press, as well as a most of the fine press materials donated by Gates, originated with the Allen Press, a fine press owned by Dorothy and Lewis Allen. Gates maintained a personal friendship as well as a professional relationship with the Allens, and much of their personal correspondence is included within the collection. Gates, a long-time member of the Friends of the Library, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1924, and in 1988 was honored with the naming of the Gates Lecture Hall.
