From the Collection: Durham was born in Iron County, Utah in 1919. He received his B.A. in English at the University of Utah in 1940 and went on to Harvard for his doctorate. From 1941-1943 he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pennsylvania. Folder 1 contains two record books he used to record information such as expenses, missionary companions, number of discussions taught, and hours spent tracting. After his mission, Durham was commissioned as regimental chaplain in the United States Army, serving in the 382nd Infantry Battalion of the 96th Division from 1943-1945. Folders 2-4 contain letters from Durham to Louis Zucker and Emily Jennings regarding his chaplain position and duties throughout the war. Folder 5 contains correspondence (1960 and 1971) concerning the provenance of the letters to Jennings. In 1945 Durham received the Purple Heart for service in the battle of Okinawa. He died in Hawaii later that year. The collection also contains two of his stories entitled "Sleeping Beauty" and "Thus Saith the Lord," as well as miscellaneous notes and Durham's biography. These materials are located in folders 6-8.
