Scope and Contents

The John Adams family papers (1886-1929) contains three photocopied documents: A journal kept by John Adams from November 1886 to October 1887, includes entries from the six months he spent in the Utah Territorial Penitentiary after his imprisonment for the practice of polygamy; a biography of John Adams (1836-1901) written in 1927 by his son, John Q. Adams; and a "Tribute to my Mother," written by John Q. Adams in 1929. Together, these documents describe Adams' experiences in prison and the hardships endured by the family of this Centerville, Utah, merchant who refused to renounce polygamy.
