Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Louis Marcus papers (1902-1939) are a collection of documents from specific events in the life of Louis Marcus (1880-1936), his wife Gertrude (d. 1955), and their son, L. Howard Marcus (1919-1984). They include Louis Marcus' personal diary, and scrapbooks from his tenure as mayor of Salt Lake City in the 1930s. Of particular interest are the brochures and maps from pre-World War II Europe and Egypt. There are also brochures from the S.S. Queen Mary and the S.S. Normandie, two luxury ocean liners who were conscripted into service during WWII. While the S.S. Queen Mary is now docked at Long Beach, the S.S. Normandie was sunk by the Germans in 1942.
