Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The John Hudson papers (1848-1852, 1980) consist of documents detailing the life and work of John Hudson (1826-1850), an English emigrant who started for the gold fields of California but was forced by illness to remain in Salt Lake City, where he served as a member of the Stansbury Expedition to the Great Salt Lake and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The John Hudson papers contain 21 letters, 11 pencil sketches, and the Constitution and Minute Book of the Colony Guard, a private emigration company. All documents in the collection were produced between 1848 and 1852. The originals of the documents in the John Hudson Papers are restricted except with permission of the head of the Manuscripts Division. Typescripts and photocopies are available for patron use.

Conditions Governing Access

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.

The original items from box 1, folders 2-11 have been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the items if being used.
