Scope and Contents
The Alfred Cumming papers consist of a microfilm copy of personal and official correspondence and a letterpress book relating to Cumming's service as Governor of Utah Territory, 1858-1861. Includes letters from Thomas L. Kane, Brigham Young, and his wife, Elizabeth Cumming; Cumming's personal record of those fleeing east from Utah while wintering with the Utah Expedition at Camp Scott, Wyoming; scrapbooks of national clippings from Cumming's term of office. The originals are located at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University.
Included in the collection is an original certificate of appointment of Charles Nettleston as Commissioner of the Territory of Utah.
