Scope and Contents

Douglass worked at the Missouri Botanical Gardens in Saint Louis, took classes at the South Dakota Agricultural College in Brookings, and taught school in South Dakota. There is extensive use of shorthand in this diary.
  1. 16 November--"The board of Regents have been in session at Aberdeen and have outdone their old record. They have removed Profs. Kerr, Aldrich, Orcutt, Lapham .... they say the whole town is indignant."
  2. 21 November--"My first days teaching for over 2 years ....
  3. "Search to know for knowledge liveth
  4. Tho the mind that fadeth dies.
  5. It may leave a grain of knowledge
  6. That into the heavens shall rise."
