Scope and Contents

The documents in this section (boxes 149-175), dating from 1901 to 1969, revolve largely around Emily Smith Stewart's role in society. Boxes 149-154 contain correspondence, telegrams, and letters of condolence following George Albert Smith's death. As in other sections, some correspondence is described in order to present examples of the topics discussed. Documents relating to the Paris Department Store are located in box 155. Included are promotional materials, such as pioneer women biographical sketches (folders 18-30), and speeches, poetry, and advisory board documents (folders 31-35). Correspondence, bulletins, news clippings, minutes, reports, statistics, patient lists, publications, and scrapbooks relating to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis are in boxes 156-165. Information on vocational rehabilitation in general is located in box 166. Materials on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Beta Sigma Phi, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Salt Lake City Council of Women, the Soroptimist Club, and other women's organizations are located in boxes 167-171. Constitutions, rosters, meeting minutes, programs, correspondence, news clippings, and publications are included. Box 172 contains personal information such as biographical sketches, a diary, patriarchal blessings, her wedding invitation, awards and citations, a last will and testament, and educational materials concerning her son, Robert Murray Stewart, Jr. Box 173 contains materials, similar to those in box 172, regarding her husband, Robert Murray Stewart. This section also contains miscellaneous subject files in box 174. Documents about the Book of Mormon, Smith family heirlooms, Orson Hyde, Heber C. Kimball, Abraham Lincoln, miracles, Nauvoo, and Joseph Smith are included. Miscellaneous notebooks, a 1914 LDS University yearbook, and news clippings are located in box 175.

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.
Some original items have been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the items if being used. Photocopies are available in the collection for research use.
